Details: Awe.The one emotion that bound over 11,000 students for four fateful days. Come 29th of January, and IIT Kharagpur witnessed a sight it had never witnessed before - the arrival of over 5,000 students from all over the country to share and disseminate knowledge.

Looking back four days later, one recalls the tumultuous journey, only to feel humbled by the magnanimity of what is now probably one of the world’s largest techno-management symposia. Calling the edition a success is probably an understatement, as would be testified to by the enormous number of scientists, technologists and innovators that were the heart of Kshitij ’09.
Amongst all the categories, the Events still did hog most of the limelight, being the mainstay of the fest, attracting enthusiastic crowds, inspiring them on the way to success, and giving shape to seedling ideas that they may blossom into trees of innovation. Not a single domain was left unexplored, as a gamut of events in Case Studies, B-Plans, Quizzing, City Planning, Architecture, Robotics, Law, and of course, Engineering left no territory uncharted. Prizes worth 45 lacs were doled out. The B-Plan Incubation this year was an astonishing 25 lacs!

Doyens of very significant fields did, of course, consider it important to make their presence felt at this edition of Kshitij. ‘Ad Hatter’ Prahlad Kakkar had the audience hooked on to his every word, as a theatre full of bright souls ebbed and surged with energy, hanging on to his every word. Philip Emeagwali, the Father of the Internet, kept people awestruck with his mind-blowing persona. Nobel Laureate Kurt Wuthrich gave valuable tips on research, inspiring a whole generation of potential researchers. Hull University’s Prof. Chandra Lalwani, Chandrayaan Pioneer S K Shivkumar, Prof. Chandra Wickramasinghe, the man behind Panspermia, Emmy Award winner Jeremy Bristow and NASA’s Christopher McKay created waves like none had before at IIT Kharagpur.

Organisations the world-over recognised Kshitij for the pioneer it is, endowing it with their prized certifications. Spearheaded by the Overnite ACM-ICPC, three other societies of International repute gave their support to events in Kshitij. ASHRAE’s Kryotech has ensured the making of great inroads into HVAC Research. The ASME Student Design Competition was truly a sight to behold, with ASME officials looking on as pioneer Robotics innovation was showcased. IMechE spiced up the on-spot events, extending its valued support for Ab Initio, the On-Spot Challenges at Kshitij. Students came up with innovative designs for the Kharagpur Railway Station, as a part of The Grand Central, now waiting to be executed at Kharagpur.

Technical Exhibitions and Workshops laid the foundation for the learning aspect of the fest this year, the Aeroshow attracting hordes of interested people, while Mind Reading Machines and Solar Robotics kept stunned audiences rooted to the spot. Workshops on topics as diverse as Film Making and Forensic Sciences, along with ones on Hands-On Robotics, Space Sciences and Financial Risk Management dotted the schedule as students got enlightened the fun way!

The Megashows, as always, were a major attraction at Kshitij. Functioning to overflowing crowds at this edition, the shows left onlookers gasping for more. Lasers and lights dominated the shows, with beautiful artists jazzing them up much further, making evenings at Kshitij events to cherish.

Facts are a great way to describe the essence of a fest. However, there is nothing that can beat being present at the hub of the action. If you missed out at this edition, keep waiting for January 2010 to be rocked by the scintillating sensation that is Kshitij...
